In this painting, Jomar portrays the story of a Spanish/Filipina maiden in the 16th century, during the Spanish colonization of the Philippines. She represents the “ideal” image of self-effacing beauty, grace and nobility, whose place was on the pedestal of male honor. She was known to be a religious person who goes to church everyday, and was admired by many in their town, especially by men.
Soon after she turned 16, she married a powerful mob leader who oppressed people and stole their lands. One day, the mob leader mysteriously disappeared. She then took over the leadership of the group with his husband’s right hand man as her lover, who was later on found dead.
